How to Print From Your Phone (iPhone and Android)
Printing from a phone used to require manufacturer apps and prayer. Today it's built into both operating systems — if the printer and phone are on the same network, it usually just works.
iPhone: AirPrint
- Open the document, photo, or email → tap Share.
- Scroll to Print (if missing, tap Edit Actions and enable it).
- Your AirPrint-compatible printers appear automatically — select, choose pages and copies, tap Print.
No drivers, no apps. If a printer is modern and on your Wi-Fi, it almost certainly speaks AirPrint.
Android: the print service
- Open the item → tap the three-dot menu (or Share) → Print.
- Select your printer from the dropdown — Android uses the Mopria standard, which nearly all current printers support.
- If the printer is missing: Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Printing → enable Default Print Service.
When your phone can't see the printer
- Same network? The #1 cause — phones on 5GHz and printers on 2.4GHz can fail to discover each other. Check both joined the same network name.
- Reboot the printer — mDNS discovery (how phones find printers) silently dies on printers running for weeks.
- Router isolation: Some routers have "AP/client isolation" that blocks device-to-device discovery — check router settings.
- Manufacturer app as fallback: HP Smart, Epson Smart Panel, and Canon PRINT work over cloud even when local discovery fails.
Print by email and cloud
Many brands assign your printer an email address (HP ePrint, for example) — email a document to it from anywhere, no same-network requirement. Google Drive and manufacturer apps also offer cloud printing for when you're away from home.
