Tablet Buying Guide: iPad vs Android vs Windows
What tablets are actually good at
Reading, Netflix in bed, video calls, note-taking with a stylus, and travel. They are NOT laptop replacements unless you add a keyboard and accept some limits.
The three families
- Apple iPad: The safest choice. Best apps, best stylus (Apple Pencil), 5–7 years of updates. iPad Air for most people; base iPad for budget; iPad Pro if you replace a laptop.
- Android tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab, etc.): Great screens, cheaper, good for media. Weaker tablet apps than iPad, but Samsung's DeX mode gives a desktop-like experience.
- Windows tablets / Surface: Real Windows in tablet form. Best if you need full Microsoft Office, Excel macros, or company software — but heavier and pricier.
Size guide
- 8 inches: Reading and kids. Fits in a jacket pocket.
- 10–11 inches: The sweet spot. Notes, movies, light work.
- 12–13 inches: Laptop replacement with keyboard. Heavy to hold.
Who should buy what
- Students: iPad or Galaxy Tab with stylus — replaces notebooks and textbooks.
- Office workers: Windows tablet/Surface, because company software runs on it.
- Families: A durable mid-range Android tablet with a kids' case.
Bottom line
A tablet is a luxury that becomes essential once you own one — for reading and media. For real work, buy the tablet AND budget for its keyboard.
