Why Is My Phone Battery Draining So Fast? 10 Fixes That Actually Work
Start here: check what's actually eating the battery
On iPhone: Settings → Battery. On Android: Settings → Battery → Usage. The chart shows exactly which app is the culprit. You'll solve 80% of drain problems with this one screen.
The fixes, in order of impact
- 1. Kill the background vampire apps. Social and shopping apps refreshing in the background are the #1 drain. Restrict background data for any app you don't need instantly (Settings → Apps → [app] → Battery → Restricted).
- 2. Turn off location for apps that don't need it. Set most apps to "While using" instead of "Always." Check Settings → Privacy → Location Services.
- 3. Lower screen brightness and shorten auto-lock. The screen is the single biggest hardware drain. 30 seconds auto-lock, auto-brightness on.
- 4. Check battery health. iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Below 80% capacity, no software fix will help — the battery needs replacement ($50–100 at a repair shop).
- 5. Update the OS. Updates often fix drain bugs. Conversely, if drain started right after an update, give it 2–3 days — indexing finishes and settles.
- 6. Poor signal = battery burn. If your signal is 1 bar all day (basement office, rural home), the phone amplifies its radio constantly. Use Wi-Fi calling.
- 7. Turn off 5G if coverage is bad. Settings → Cellular → Voice & Data → LTE. On weak 5G, LTE uses far less power.
- 8. Disable always-on display. It looks great and costs 5–10% battery per day.
- 9. Check for runaway apps. An app stuck in a crash loop drains fast. If one app shows huge background time, force-close it or reinstall.
- 10. Last resort: factory reset. Back up first, reset, and reinstall only what you need. If drain persists even then → hardware issue, see a repair shop.
The myth to ignore
"Closing apps saves battery" is wrong on modern phones — relaunching apps costs MORE power than leaving them frozen. Manage background refresh instead.
